Moth's gifts include the power of the whirlwind, ease of movement in darkness/shadow, transformation/metamorphosis, ability to find light in darkness, hearing spoken and unspoken messages. They are different from butterflies, in that they are nocturnal rather than diurnal. Nocturnal creatures gather their life-sustaining activities in complete darkness, which is why they are also symbolic of dreams, intuition, and secret knowledge.

If we translate this into the human experience,
moth’s message is to use our dreams, our awareness and our deep, inner knowing to navigate through the darkest hours of our lives. To do so, we need the FAITH of moth: moth never questions that each night, her needs will be met. In the same way, we can harness our faith to help us  move through shadowy times of uncertainty and darkness.

As a creature of the night, and by her navigational devices, we see the moth is highly influenced by the power of the moon. Although it is s still unproven as to why the moth is driven to light, it is hypothesized that the moth navigates by lunar light. In the absence of moonlight, the moth moves to the next best thing: man-made light. So vigilant is her path to light, she even risks losing her life.
Here we see a fragile vulnerability in the moth. The moon is her mother and she will follow her course at all cost. This makes her open to distraction, vulnerable to harm. Moth shows us that we must learn to adjust our course as our path indicates rather than drive forward without heeding important signs along the way. An interesting trait of the moth is how they use their wings. A resting moth either wraps its wings around itself, holds them extended to the side, or folds the wings up. This implies a basic nurturing property. As we faithfully navigate and feel our way into divine light and our spiritual purpose, we must ground and nurture ourselves. For sometimes, as we fly high with the moth, our higher perception can feel overwhelming and confusing. It can feel downright dark and scary!

The moth is an optimist and opportunist with countless transformative  properties. From them we learn how to expand and perfect our inherent psychic abilities, and how to let go of negative energies and unwelcome influences, helping us move into our personal power and happiness.

Help the Hawaiian Monk Seal

In August 2011, Scott and I had the blessing of having two separate encounters with the endangered Hawaiian monk seals. They brought so much joy to our day and we reflected how one day, we may return to our island home and never get to see these wonderful creatures again. While they are protected as a Threatened Species under the US Endangered Species Act and wildlife laws of the State of Hawaii, please check out the following sight for information about how to help.  http://www.mcbi.org/donate/donate.htm

Also, below is a video of these creatures. Let's do something so that we don't have to rely on you tube to see these marvelous animals.

"The teachers at SS are extremely knowledgeable and experienced, and somehow are able to be both supportive and challenging at the same time. I particularly appreciate the attention paid to maintaining healthy alignment, coordinating movement with breath, and to encouraging each student to find their own unique experience of a given asana. At SS, I feel that the asanas are there to serve me and my body, not the other way around. I would enthusiastically recommend SS to anyone interested in yoga!"-GP, Silver Spring, MD

"Just over a year ago I started coming to Sacred Space which my daughter had found when she visited from California.  I thought I would try it out but never realized how it had became a very positive part of my life.  I now tell my friends that I am addicted to yoga.  I love the flexibility it has given me and the feeling of calm within myself.  The classes are wonderful that you offer.  I never feel like any of the classes are the same.  They are always different and I truly learn something new every time I come.   I am so impressed with the instructors that you have teaching us.  They all have their unique approaches to the practice of yoga which I never tire of.  It is evident that you and your instructors keep up with the latest yoga education of which we truly benefit from.   I especially like the fact that your instructors also incorporate life thoughts to think about when we practice, they always makes me think how I can view life in a more positive way in a crazy world. Anyway, I love the welcoming environment that you provide and the instructors that you have teach.  It has been a wonderful experience for me of which I plan to continue for a very long time.  Yoga has become part of me.  Thank you for all you do.~ S.
