Savasana is a superior pose for creating much needed rest and rejeuvanation. We live in a world where it becomes imperative to create conscious moments of total stillness and relaxation. As opposed to simply sleeping, savasana invites us to experience the same restoration while we are "awake." This is powerful on many levels. It teaches us how to truly discover how to be still within activity. Think of this posture as filling your gas tank...if you're running on empty, you can't get anywhwere. Of course, we're not cars, and we can keep going even when the tank is below empty! And often, this is exactly what we do. We keep going, even when we should stop and refuel. This is both our curse and our blessing. This ability to keep going can teach us how to respect our bodies and treat it like any other living thing in nature....if we are to go out in the world an be sacred healers, activists, and peace lovers, if we are to be truly happy and full, parents who are present for thier children, friends and loved ones, then we must refuel. This is not an option, but a necessity.
In the following posture, we going to spend 10 minutes filling our tank.
You'll need 3 blankets, each rolled tight, like a burrito.
-Place one blanket under the knees, one under the mid-back (right across and under the upper ribs and shoulder blades) and one under the neck (it should fit snugly in the natural curve of your cervical spine).
-Lay back on these blankets, move around until you feel total comfort, making any shifts you need.
Let your legs relax as wide as your hips, or wider and your feet, as you release them will naturally turn out.
-Your top shoulders will fall between the blanket under your neck and the blanket under your mid-back. You can bend your elbows, and rest the arms in a 90 degree shape between the empty space.
Now...
Settle in. Chest open. Collarbones wide.
Palms open and the eyes soft and closed.
Soften your knees and your toes.
Let gravity takeover here. The more you can relax, the deeper you can go.
Breathe naturally, but purposefully into your back ribs, side ribs, and frontal ribs.
Allow your abdominal organs to release, your head to be heavy, your mouth to soften at the corners.
Let Gravity take over. Let go of all tension.
As you inhale, Let. As you exhale, go.
Inhale, let....exhale, go...
Repeat this mantra internally, inhaling, let, exhaling, go, until you feel everything dissolve.
What the mind doesn't resolve the heart will solve.
Let yourself be. Let your thoughts be, your sensations be, everything is fine and perfect just as it is.
The mind dissolves into the soil of your body, the mind dissolves into the waters of your breath, the mind melts in the warm fire of the simple desire for deep rest and peace.
Become the elements. Earth, water, fire, air. Feel all four elements present and available for you, helping you to inahale, let and exhale, go.
Try to remain her for at least 10 minutes. You can set a timer or just let the 10 minutes become 30! It's totally up to you. You can also put on a piece of music that you find deeply relaxing.
Most importantly, enjoy. Everything in your life will be there when you "awaken". So for these precious moments, let go.
